Book Review: Tris and Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison

Tris and Izzie (TBR Oct. 11, 2011)
A modern retelling of the German fairytale "Tristan and Isolde", Tris and Izzie is about a young witch named Izzie who is dating Mark King, the captain of the basketball team and thinks her life is going swimmingly well. Until -- she makes a love potion for her best friend Brangane and then ends up taking it herself accidentally, and falling in love with Tristan, the new guy at school.

Ok. Where to begin. hmm, this is the hardest review I've ever had to write. I grew up in a household where 'if you don't have nothing nice to say, then don't say nothing at all'. *crickets crickets.... Ok ok, it wasn't all bad. I love the cover. It's very pretty.

I found my self very disaapointed with this book. It started good and I was really into the developing story. However, the more I read I had to wonder if a 13 year old wrote it. So I looked up the author of the book. Not a teenager, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt because the protagonist was supposed to be 16 so maybe that was why it felt as if it was elementary. Isolde's thoughts and emotions were disconnected. One minute she'd be involved in epic battle with a demonic creature then the next she would be swooning about her boyfriends lips and arms, then it was like oops back to the battle. Very awkward. I really didn't like the main character. She wasn't very smart and her BFF Branna or Brangane was just rude. How are you going to go after your best friends boyfriend the way she did and still try to be friends. Pffft. I guess the same way your BFF is going to give you a love potion to make you fall in love with a stranger because you are always alone.

I won't rant about this book. Like I said, I was really into the story in the beginning. And I like the idea of the story, the setting, time, plot, everything. It just wasn't well executed. I could have been so much better. This author has written quite a number of books which made me feel better about writing this review. I couldn't write this openly about a debut author. The best part of the book was Tristan. He was the only character that didn't irritate me to no end. Even the "monsters" irked me.

In conclusion (to be construtive), the story was just poorly written. The characters weren't well developed. There was nothing that made you sympathize with Izzie's plight or root for her. Some of the characters actions were just unrealistic (even for a paranormal story) in response to normal, every day things like scheming frenemies and the new boy at school. It was just a big disappointment.

This was my first Netgalley read.

Follow Friday & TGIF

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee.  This weeks featured blog is Read. Breathe. Relax. and the weekly question is:

Q. Let's step away from besties...What is the worst book that you've ever read and actually finished?

I have a very hard time finishing a book I don't like. If I can't get into it in the first few pages, I tend to put it down. The last book that I read but didn't like was Cut by Patricia McCormick. It was so short that I just kept reading. I don't know why but I just didn't like it.

Blogger Confession: What's the last book you could not finish?
(or had a hard time finishing?)

You know, it really bothers me when a book or series gets rave reviews then I buy it and start reading and I just can't seem to get into it. Beautiful Creatures was that book for me. It started good and I don't know if it just slowed down or I got distracted by something else, but I put it down and haven't picked it back up yet. I will probably try again especially since I already have the first two books of the series. It seems like a waste not to read them. They do look really pretty on my shelf though.

Today's Obsession: Couches

When I moved I decided not to take my couch with me. It was on its last leg and when you move somewhere new you want a new look. Right? Yeah, so now I'm looking for a couch (on a very limited budget). To me a couch isn't just a couch. It's a place of relaxation, warmth. The thing you day dream about while you are at work. I have a list of requirements. 1. Must be comfortable. I need to be able to curl up with a pillow, under a blanket and read my day away. 2. Must be sturdy. I have a 10 year old little boy who still has the imagination God gave him. Nuff said. 3. Must stain-guarded. I have a furry cat, a sloppy husband and that 10 year old I mentioned earlier. So between entering every giveaway at the Freedom Giveaway Hop (Ends today! Click here btw if you would like to enter some of the awesome giveaways) I have been scouring the internet looking for sofas. (*disclaimer: The pics below are mostly dreams. I can't afford the majority of these couches).

Ooo Purple. The hubs would not go for it.

This one either but pink! love.

Nice style, bad color.

Very Interesting.

This couch is so cool!

I want this whole living room.

Awesome!

I love this idea of this couch. You can pull it apart but you can also put it together and climb in. Love love.

Perfect for just me!

Ok, there isn't a couch in this pic but just look at all the books. Drool!

It's a big ole kitty couch!

Not cute but this is probably the most comfortable couch ever!

Sigh. I'm still no closer to finding a couch. For now I'll just have to keep reading on my bed.

Waiting on Wednesday (9): Everneath

I haven't been reading or blogging or anything this week. I had too much fun this weekend and I'm still paying for it. Anywhoo, I did participate in WOW this week.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton (TBR Jan. 3, 2012)
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's.
