Book Review: Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Weiss

With her father imprisoned, 15-year-old Meredith thinks she could live out her high-school days safely, but when he is released early for good behavior, her security is shattered. A popular youth baseball coach, her father has abused Mer as well as other boys and girls. With strict orders that he not be left alone with his daughter, he is returned to the condo complex where she and her mother live. In contrast to Mer's terror, her mother is giddy with delight at his return, and together the reunited couple plans to conceive another child. Yet in the shadows and stillness, Mer's nightmare begins anew. (from Amazon.com)

The subject matter was difficult but the read was easy. It was a relatively short book that starts right off with Meredith's father coming home. Parts of this book seriously made me mad. For example, Merdith's mother cares only about her marriage to Meredith's father. Her biggest concen is them being a family again and from what I inferred with or without Meredith. However, Meredith's dad wants her around - for obvious reasons - and Meredith is caught in the middle. She scared but empowered at the same time. The book is told from her point of view and she tells how she feels about the past and the present. The one thing I did appreiate about this book was the fact that it wasn't explicit. There are no serious scenes of violence or molestation in the book. Overall, it was a good book.
