St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
I get tired of picking up books that say, if you love Twilight you will love...... Honestly, just because it contains teenagers and vampires doesn't mean it will be the "new" twilight.
That being said, I loved this book!! It's obvious that this book is the first of a series because it wasn't big on action. A few events take place but it was mainly setting up characters, the good, the bad, the situations and who does what, giving a little insight into this new world of Moroi and Dhampirs and Strigoi. I really appreciate the bond between Rose and Lissa. They are both equally protective over each other. I'm sensing this dark, dangerous side in Lissa that has me a little worried but also intrigued. This book wasn't fluffy at all. It had its dark, edgy moments which I love. Characters which linger in your mind and you can't wait to see what is going to happen with them. I wasn't too impressed with the boys at the academy. They seemed a little flat. The girls ruled this book. However, one guy stood out. Dimitri. Sigh. I can't wait to see what develops between him and Rose. Although, I know technically nothing should develop since they are both supposed to protect Lissa, I'm sure it will anyways!
Overall, this was a great start to the series. I hate getting into a series then by the third book I'm over it. I really hope that doesn't happen with this series because right now I can't wait to read book two!
Sidenote: Don't get me wrong because I love the Twilight saga, but Twilight has got nothing on this book. Twilight is a good love story with a little danger, I have a feeling this is going to be a whole lot of danger and some serious love stories. Two different leagues.

I wasn't in love with the series from the first book, in fact, the first book is my least favourite - it is one of those that seems to get better! I'm about to start #4! :) Book #3 was amaaaazing!
